The monsters in the series aren't just mythical creatures; they also encompass the labels and judgments people place on the characters. Resh aimed to provide young readers with a fantastical adventure while addressing the theme of authenticity and the importance of forming genuine connections. She believes middle-grade readers are yearning for such adventures, and her series offers characters they can identify with as they navigate challenges in their lives.
